WHAT TO EXPECT
Myofascial Release (MFR) and Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) sessions are not like a full-body massage session with lotion or oil and gliding strokes. Clients will lay on top of the sheet dressed in loose, comfortable clothes (i.e. athletic shorts, loose pants, comfortable bra, tank top, etc.), so if necessary they can get off the table for a mid-session reassessment. We will discuss your health history and pain patterns, do a visual and physical assessment to look for restrictions in your range of motion, and clues as to the origin of your pain.
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) Sessions
Neuromuscular Therapy is focused, pain relief work targeting specific muscles and the muscles that refer pain. NMT is an evidence informed approach to resolving pain where we use problem solving to get to the root of the issue vs. simply brute force to eradicate your pain. After the initial assessment tender spots and trigger points will be addressed during the session examining the tissues and all areas of the muscle. This is not a passive, relaxing massage. Instead the client plays an active role in the session providing feedback to the therapist to get the exact spot and the exact amount of pressure. For the client the goal is for the work to feel very accurate and thorough.

Myofascial Release (MFR) Sessions
John F. Barnes' Myofascial Release utilizes techniques that are very different from other forms manual therapy, MFR, and general therapeutic massage. We work to find restrictions in your myofascial (myo = muscle; fascia = connective tissues) and gently stretch those areas to reduce pain and improve function. Because the fascial system is a continuous, uninterrupted 2-dimensional web that runs from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet, it directly impacts and influences every system (e.g. muscles, bones, cells) and motion center of the body. So if there is a restriction in one part of our body (fascia), it will have an effect on other parts of the body.
With the therapist's intuitive touch and constant, sustained pressure to treat these restricted regions, not only can the symptoms be effectively treated, but the underlying issue can also be detected and addressed. We will focus on the whole body in every session, but not like a full-body massage. For example, even if your primary issue is neck stiffness or pain, I might work on restrictions that present in your rib cage, pelvis, arms, and hips because every part of your body affects every other part of your body via the fascial web. Fascial restrictions, which do no appear on standard medical tests (X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, etc.) are frequent root causes of chronic pain, immobility, and/or decreased function and often go undiagnosed.
The session is done skin to skin with stretching-like palm compressions held on an area for 3-5min or more. Pain/pressure on a 1-10 scale (very light to OUCH!) should only be around a 7-8). The type of MFR technique given will depend on where in the body the therapist feels the fascial restriction.
The client is encouraged to be present and aware of sensations within their body, and are encouraged to move or unwind if they feel their movements support what the therapist is doing. Not much conversation happens, but feedback is still important to help with the treatment to be as effective as possible.
